Design Brief

Contest title: Modern Apothecary Style Logo for Candle Studio/ Personal Care Products
Sub title: Part 1: Logo + Biz Card Contest
Category: Logo Design

Brand Name:

Etc & Co.

Summary:

To create a logo/brand that reflects a modern apothecary aesthetic.

Description:

Etc & Co. is a new business located in Australia. We are purveyors of apothecary style goods and we are committed to delivering high quality, natural products which are hand crafted in small batches.

We will be launching our range initially with a series of hand-poured soy wax candles presented in vintage style mason jars and will be offering a range of natural bath and body products in the near future.

Our logo/brand (and future packaging) must be neutral enough to fit into any interior décor, and present with a clean Modern Apothecary aesthetic (ie. Aesop, Le Labo).

Our target audience are Australian women aged 25-55 yrs. who are prepared to pay for top-end, high quality eco-friendly products that not only perform well, but LOOK fabulous in their home. These women are not only buying a great product, but also a “lifestyle brand image” and packaging.

Design Goals:

Modern Apothecary aesthetic - clean, stylish and simple. We want the logo/brand to reflect the purity of handmade goods, the art behind it, the natural aspect, the fact that it is a beautiful gift to buy yourself or someone else.

We like these brand identities: Le Labo; Aesop; Barr & Co; Brooklyn Candle Studio.

Monogram - We would also like a custom AMPERSAND symbol created which can be used as a key design element in our brand identity, allowing us to use it separately to the main logo (ie. as a wax seal or laser cut wood tags). Check out how the brand UGMONK have creatively used their customised version of the Ampersand symbol in their merchandising and brand identity.  Also look at this link for creative inspiration - http://www.pinterest.com/pin/251779435391220473/

Typography - can use either serif or sans serif, or a mix of the two fonts. Typewriter or vintage letterpress fonts are also an option.  I like the look of inter-spacing characters too.

Logo must also translate well in both black on white, and white on black as it will be used in a hand stamped format in a variety of sizes to stamp the logo onto kraft brown packaging boxes; muslin bags; envelopes; swing tags to give it that 'hand crafted' and individually made feel (not mass produced).

Colour Palette (max 3 colours): Black or Dark Charcoal Grey/Brown; Ivory or Cream. An accent colour can be used if kept to a minimum or to add a little visual pop.

I will require the final logo, design elements, typography and colour palette details to be inserted into a BRAND STYLE GUIDE file (which I will supply to the winner).  I would like all designers to take the time to browse through this brand guide on the ISSUU link below, before starting your design to ensure you have considered how the logo/brand will be used in the future for consistency of brand identity.

Design No-Gos:

No green or blue colours

Not a busy 'Old Style Vintage' logo - please keep it modern with just a NOD to the past

No florals or flourishes

Thank you designers for all your entries. I am currently focussing on a few specific designs by two designers and in the process of short listing for a winner. Many thanks!

Without wanting to confuse anyone, I am hoping the images I've uploaded will get your creative juices flowing. I am not averse to your exploring a mix of typography fonts placed together (ie. Frankie and Swiss logo) or the use of a hand cursive font (ie. Blacklist Forever Print). Providing it remains clean and within the industrial feel of Modern Apothecary.

Please remember that the logo design MUST be able to translate well in a range of directions - stacked, circular (for lid labels), rectangular or square for use on glass container labels and shipping tags. Please keep this in mind.

I have uploaded a few images to hopefully give some better direction. Modern Apothecary design to me is perfectly represented by the brands LE LABO and AESOP. I also really like the apothecary spin used by BROOKLYN CANDLE STUDIO. Please study these 3 brands to understand what is common about each of them. They all have a modern industrial feel to them, they are all clean and simple in typography, colour palette used and with their packaging & labelling design.

PLEASE consider the logo style in a packaging context. This will be the next project and to help I have loaded a mood board with images of the LE LABO brand - these images, use of furniture and colouring is ideally what I am wanting to achieve with the Etc & Co. brand image.

Please email me as much as needed as I will make myself available, but consider any time difference if there is a delay in my response as I am in Australia. Thank you.

Hi guys thanks for your early design concepts, but it's not the look I am after they look a bit art deco which is a long way from the apothecary era and the modern take on it;

We have played in-house trying to come up with a design and not been happy with anything we came up with due to our limited graphic design skills. So we are hoping to see some innovation on this platform.
